Hello, I'm Lorien.

I'm a creative Front End Developer, have been building websites for over 15 years, and am easy to work with.

Skills

I can turn an idea, a wireframe or a full design into clean, standards compliant, accessible, semantically correct and progressively enhanced front end code. My background in UX and design contributes greatly to my work processes and understanding and I also have experience in team leadership and relationship management. I have a strong work ethic and believe in helping things to run smoothly.

Portfolio

ATD Travel Services 2014 - date

Senior Front End Developer, ATD sites

The world’s largest attraction ticket broker serving customers in the UK, Ireland, Germany and Brazil. Sites are built on Drupal 6, with (mostly) inheritance based delivery. My brief is to strip back the layers of styles that have built up over 12 years and write new, clean CSS (SASS) adopting a flatter, component-based approach. As part of this I'm introducing fresh new branding, and of course reducing page weights. I'm also adjusting the XHTML to improve accessibility, semantics and SEO, and consolidating and reusing JavaScript and jQuery wherever possible. The challenge is to adjust all of this while the sites are live so there is no downtime for the business or customers, resulting in gradual, daily progress.

TUI Travel PLC 2007-2013

Lead Front End Developer, Alpine platform

Aim was to encourage the growing number of holidaymakers who wished to buy Specialist Holidays Group's ski and summer package holidays online. Presenting our products and the complicated booking system in the simplest, most attractive way possible was imperative. After completing some temporary reskins for existing sites, I was thrilled to be given the brand new java inheritance based 'Alpine' platform from the beginning until all sites were migrated. Front end was written in XHTML, CSS and jQuery, the process involved ongoing UX and prototyping. My initial role as Senior Front End Developer expanded to management and team leadership as the department grew rapidly.

Interesource 2006-2007

Senior Front End Developer, websites and blogs

This forward-thinking agency (later bought by Global Beach) specialising in social media sites (many award-winning) for well-known clients, took a human centred, agile approach to ensure accurate direction and fast turnaround of projects. As Senior Front End Developer I worked directly with the Designers and Back End Developers to produce pixel-perfect, accessible and cross-browser compatible code. I learned to skin fast and accurately, and became very proficient in bug fixing.

The National Archives 2002-2005

Designer and Front End Developer, websites and microsites

Public facing Government agency with strict web and accessibility guidelines, with extra consideration given to the RNIB accessibility and Plain English recommendations. Design role included producing websites and promotional print material, advising on and applying better UX and IA principles, and training and management of other Designers. As temporary Web Content Manager I was responsible for the editorial content and technical structure of the website, and as temporary Head of the Web Team I was responsible for the overall design and content of the websites. The code is old fashioned because our browser compatibility extended back to Netscape 4! (Apologies, but that was the brief).
